2018 Trail Building & Maintenance Trips – Call for Volunteers

The dates and locations for our 2018 Trail Building & Maintenance Trips have been set. 

2018 Trail Building & Maintenance Trip Schedule (details below): 

  • Trip #1 High Rock Trail, Hybrid Trip – Monday, June 18 to Thursday, June 21
  • Trip #2 Dutch Creek Bridge Building Trip – Sunday, June 24 to Thursday, June 28 – FULL (waiting list only)
  • Trip #3 High Rock Trail, Hybrid Trip – Monday, June 25 to Thursday, June 28
  • Trip #4 High Rock Trail Signature Trip – Wednesday, July 18 to Sunday, July 22
  • Trip #5 High Rock Trail Signature Trip – Sunday, July 22 to Thursday, July 26
  • Trip #6 Original GDT Walking Trip – Tuesday, July 17 to Sunday, July 22 – FULL (waiting list only)
  • Trip #7 High Rock Trail Bridge Building Trip – Tuesday, August 7 to Friday, August 10

This year we will be holding 6 trail building trips on the new High Rock Trail near Dutch Creek in June and July, continuing construction of the first new section of the GDT in 30 years:

TRIP #1 – High Rock Trail, Hybrid Trip

  • DATES: June 18 to 21, 2018
  • SIZE: 15 volunteers
  • BASIC CAMP SET-UP: Kitchen tent, stove, tables, fire pit & latrine.
  • FOOD: Volunteers will bring & cook their own food. 
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers should have experience backcountry camping and hiking. This trip is designed with experienced volunteers in mind so trail-building experience is recommended.
  • COST: Free for GDTA Members.

 TRIP #2 – Dutch Creek Bridge Building Trip

  • DATES: June 24 to 28, 2018
  • SIZE: 13 volunteers
  • CAMP SET-UP: Basic, fire pit & latrine.
  • FOOD: Volunteers will bring & cook their own food. 
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: This trip involves bridge building so volunteers with wood construction experience and comfortable being a driver or passenger on an ATV are preferred. Volunteers should also have experience backcountry camping and hiking. 
  • COST: Free for GDTA Members.

 TRIP #3 – High Rock Trail, Hybrid Trip

  • DATES: June 25 to 28, 2018
  • SIZE: 15 volunteers
  • BASIC CAMP SET-UP: Kitchen tent, stove, tables, fire pit & latrine.
  • FOOD: Volunteers will bring & cook their own food. 
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers should have experience backcountry camping and hiking. This trip is designed with experienced volunteers in mind so trail-building experience is recommended.
  • COST: Free for GDTA Members.

 TRIP #4 – High Rock Trail Signature Trip

  • DATES: July 18 to 22, 2018
  • SIZE: 20 volunteers
  • ENHANCED CAMP SET-UP: Full camp kitchen (including tents, tables, stoves and BBQ), fire pit, solar shower & latrine.
  • FOOD: All food is included, prepared by our head chef and a team of assistants (all volunteers take turns helping out in the kitchen). 
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Trail-building experience is not required, but volunteers should have experience backcountry camping and hiking.
  • COST: $100 for GDTA Members.

 TRIP #5 – High Rock Trail Signature Trip

  • DATES: July 22 to 26, 2018
  • SIZE: 20 volunteers
  • ENHANCED CAMP SET-UP: Full camp kitchen (including tents, tables, stoves and BBQ), fire pit, solar shower & latrine.
  • FOOD: All food is included, prepared by our head chef and a team of assistants (all volunteers take turns helping out in the kitchen). 
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Trail-building experience is not required, but volunteers should have experience backcountry camping and hiking.
  • COST: $100 for GDTA Members.

TRIP #6 – Original GDT Walking Trip 
This trip involves doing light trail maintenance while hiking 15-20 km per day on the beautiful section of trail known as the “Original GDT” from Baril Creek to Dutch Creek.

  • DATES: July 17 to 22, 2018
  • SIZE: 6 volunteers
  • CAMP: Primitive backcountry camping. Volunteers must bring all personal camping equipment.
  • FOOD: Volunteers will bring & cook their own food.
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers must have previous backcountry hiking and camping experience and a moderate fitness level. 
  • COST: Free for GDTA members.

TRIP #7 – High Rock Trail, Bridge Building Trip
This trip will continue construction of the new High Rock section of the Great Divide Trail north of Crowsnest Pass. Key activities will be construction of a bridge.

  • DATES: August 7 to 10, 2018
  • LOCATION: First Creek valley
  • SIZE: 10 volunteers
  • BASIC CAMP SET-UP: Shared camp kitchen (including stove and food storage) & latrine
  • FOOD: Volunteers will bring & cook their own food.
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA, gas included.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Trail crew experience is not required, but volunteers should have experience backcountry camping and hiking. Tool training and safety orientation will be provided by the GDTA.
  • COST: Free for GDTA Members.

TRIP #8: David Thompson Heritage Trail Upgrade, Self-Supported Trip
The David Thompson Heritage Trail is an important connection for the GDT between Yoho and Banff National Parks, but hasn’t been maintained in almost two decades. This trip will focus on restoring the trail from Cairnes Creek to Lambe Creek in the spectacular Blaeberry Valley northeast of Golden BC. Trip tasks will include removing brush and deadfall and re-establishing washed out trail tread. Depending on road conditions, our first and last days include a up to an 8 km level walk next to the scenic Blaeberry River, with luggage shuttled to and from camp by truck and/or ATV.

  • DATES: August 30 to September 3, 2018
  • LOCATION: David Thompson Heritage trailhead
  • SIZE: 10 volunteers
  • BASIC CAMP SET-UP: Self-supported, shared camp kitchen (including stove and food storage) and latrine.
  • FOOD: Volunteers will bring & cook their own food. 
  • TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling will be organized by the GDTA.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Trail crew experience is not required but volunteers should have experience backcountry camping and hiking. 
  • COST: Free for GDTA Members.
